HENRI MATISSE

1869 – 1954 · France

Critics called his movement les fauves — the wild beasts — because his colours were so raw they seemed almost violent. His lifelong rivalry with Picasso defined modern art for half a century. Crippled at 72, he invented paper cut-outs and produced his most joyful work from his wheelchair. He never stopped. His colour never dimmed.

A fine art print of Henri Matisse's Violinist at the Window

HENRI MATISSE

The wild beast who made colour sing.

Critics called his movement Fauvism - from les fauves, the wild beasts, because his colours were so raw and non-naturalistic they seemed almost aggressive. Matisse spent his career in a great creative rivalry with Picasso, each pushing the other to greater extremes. Crippled by illness at seventy-two, he simply invented a new medium - paper cut-outs - and produced some of his most joyful work from his wheelchair.

He never stopped. His colour never dimmed. And his prints remain the surest way to make any room feel alive.

Privileged Prints: Museum-quality. Sustainably made. Unapologetically bold.
